Why Run a VIN Check on a Nissan?

Nissan vehicles are among the most popular on the used car market, which also makes them a common target for fraud. Odometer rollback, undisclosed accident damage, and hidden liens are just a few of the problems that can turn a seemingly great deal into a costly mistake.

A VIN check gives you the full picture before you buy. Vektracer compiles data from insurance companies, DMV records, service centers, and auction databases to build a complete history of any Nissan vehicle. You'll see everything — from minor fender benders to major structural damage — so you can buy with confidence.

Whether you're buying from a dealership, a private seller on Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace, or shopping at auction, a VIN report is your most important tool. It costs a fraction of what a hidden problem could cost you in repairs.

How to Read a Nissan VIN

Every Nissan VIN follows the same 17-character layout, but the values in it are specific to Nissan. The facts below come from 473 Nissan VINs decoded on Vektracer, model years 1986 to 2026, so they describe what Nissan actually stamps rather than the generic rules.

Positions 1 to 3: the manufacturer code

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier. Nissan uses several, and the first character tells you the region the vehicle was built in. These are the codes we see most often for Nissan, with the assembly plant each one most commonly points to:

CodeMost common plantCountryShare of Nissan VINs
5N1Smyrna, TennesseeUnited States25%
3N1Aguascalientes, AguascalientesMexico22%
1N4Smyrna, TennesseeUnited States18%
JN8Miyawaka, FukuokaJapan16%
JN1Kyushu Plant, Miyako-gun, FukuokaJapan10%
1N6Canton, MississippiUnited States7%

A manufacturer code identifies the maker and region, not the factory. The plant is position 11, so one code can cover more than one plant; the table shows the plant each code points to most often in our data.

Across those VINs, Nissan vehicles were built in United States (52%), Mexico (24%), Japan (23%) and South Korea (1%).

Positions 4 to 8: the vehicle, and position 9: the check digit

The middle section encodes model line, body, engine and restraint system in a layout Nissan defines for itself, which is why a generic decoder gets the trim wrong and a Nissan-aware one does not. Among the Nissan VINs we have decoded, 43% are SUVs, 30% are sedans and 14% are hatchbacks. Position 9 is a check digit computed from the other sixteen characters. A Nissan VIN that fails it was copied down wrong or is not real.

Position 10: the model year

One letter or digit encodes the model year. These are the values we see on Nissan VINs and the year each decodes to:

R= 2024P= 2023M= 2021L= 2020K= 2019J= 2018H= 2017G= 2016F= 2015E= 2014

The sequence repeats every thirty years, so J means 2018 on a modern Nissan and 1988 on an old one; the rest of the VIN settles which. A car advertised as a year newer than its position 10 says is, at minimum, a price conversation.

Position 11: the assembly plant

A single character names the factory. On Nissan VINs we most often see C, W, L, N, Y and M. Positions 12 to 17 are the serial number, the part every history record is keyed to. Decoding identifies the model; the serial identifies the car.

A typical Nissan VIN, read left to right

5N1······GC······

5N1 is Nissan, built in Smyrna. Position 10 G is model year 2016, and position 11 C is the plant code. This is the most common combination among the NissanRogue VINs we have decoded. The middle five and the serial are masked because they identify one specific vehicle.
