Why Run a VIN Check on a Mercedes-Benz?

Mercedes-Benz vehicles are among the most popular on the used car market, which also makes them a common target for fraud. Odometer rollback, undisclosed accident damage, and hidden liens are just a few of the problems that can turn a seemingly great deal into a costly mistake.

A VIN check gives you the full picture before you buy. Vektracer compiles data from insurance companies, DMV records, service centers, and auction databases to build a complete history of any Mercedes-Benz vehicle. You'll see everything — from minor fender benders to major structural damage — so you can buy with confidence.

Whether you're buying from a dealership, a private seller on Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace, or shopping at auction, a VIN report is your most important tool. It costs a fraction of what a hidden problem could cost you in repairs.

How to Read a Mercedes-Benz VIN

Every Mercedes-Benz VIN follows the same 17-character layout, but the values in it are specific to Mercedes-Benz. The facts below come from 422 Mercedes-Benz VINs decoded on Vektracer, model years 1985 to 2027, so they describe what Mercedes-Benz actually stamps rather than the generic rules.

Positions 1 to 3: the manufacturer code

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier. Mercedes-Benz uses several, and the first character tells you the region the vehicle was built in. These are the codes we see most often for Mercedes-Benz, with the assembly plant each one most commonly points to:

CodeMost common plantCountryShare of Mercedes-Benz VINs
WDDSindelfingenGermany30%
4JGVance, AlabamaUnited States18%
WDBSindelfingenGermany11%
WDCBremenGermany9%
W1NBremenGermany9%
55SVance, AlabamaUnited States9%

A manufacturer code identifies the maker and region, not the factory. The plant is position 11, so one code can cover more than one plant; the table shows the plant each code points to most often in our data.

Across those VINs, Mercedes-Benz vehicles were built in Germany (54%), United States (28%), Hungary (5%) and Finland (4%).

Positions 4 to 8: the vehicle, and position 9: the check digit

The middle section encodes model line, body, engine and restraint system in a layout Mercedes-Benz defines for itself, which is why a generic decoder gets the trim wrong and a Mercedes-Benz-aware one does not. Among the Mercedes-Benz VINs we have decoded, 36% are SUVs, 34% are sedans and 7% are coupes. Position 9 is a check digit computed from the other sixteen characters. A Mercedes-Benz VIN that fails it was copied down wrong or is not real.

Position 10: the model year

One letter or digit encodes the model year. These are the values we see on Mercedes-Benz VINs and the year each decodes to:

P= 2023N= 2022M= 2021L= 2020K= 2019J= 2018H= 2017G= 2016F= 2015D= 2013

The sequence repeats every thirty years, so J means 2018 on a modern Mercedes-Benz and 1988 on an old one; the rest of the VIN settles which. A car advertised as a year newer than its position 10 says is, at minimum, a price conversation.

Position 11: the assembly plant

A single character names the factory. On Mercedes-Benz VINs we most often see A, F, U, N, B and P. Positions 12 to 17 are the serial number, the part every history record is keyed to. Decoding identifies the model; the serial identifies the car.

A typical Mercedes-Benz VIN, read left to right

4JG······GA······

4JG is Mercedes-Benz, built in Vance. Position 10 G is model year 2016, and position 11 A is the plant code. This is the most common combination among the Mercedes-BenzGle-class VINs we have decoded. The middle five and the serial are masked because they identify one specific vehicle.
