VIN Check

A "clean title" doesn't mean theft-free. Check whether a VIN appears in stolen-vehicle records before you buy.

What Stolen Vehicle History Means For The Vehicle

Buying a vehicle with an undisclosed theft history creates legal, financial, and safety risks that are difficult to untangle after the fact.

You may not be the legal owner

In most states, someone who unknowingly buys a stolen vehicle doesn't gain legal title — even after paying fair market value in good faith. The original owner, or the insurer that paid out the theft claim, can hold a prior claim to the car, and law enforcement can seize it with no compensation to you.

You may not own it

VIN cloning creates an identity problem

A cloned vehicle wears the identity of a real, legitimate car, so its title, registration, and insurance can all look perfectly clean — because they belong to that other car. If the legitimate vehicle ever turns up in a citation, accident, or legal matter, your paperwork is suddenly tangled up in it.

Cloned VIN risk

Stolen cars are often stripped or damaged

Vehicles stolen for parts are routinely gutted of catalytic converters, airbags, wheels, and electronics before they're abandoned. A recovered theft that wasn't properly disclosed can be missing expensive components that are easy to overlook in a quick once-over.

Parts may be missing

Insurance gets complicated after the sale

An insurer that already paid out a theft claim may still hold a legal interest in the vehicle. Insure a previously stolen car without knowing its past and you can run into denied claims or a cancelled policy if that theft history surfaces later.

The Theft Check

A stolen or cloned car is only as convincing as the records behind it. We line up a vehicle's title, location, and theft history so the pieces that don't add up have somewhere to show.

The Takeaway

This VIN comes back clean on theft — and the same cross-check is what flags a stolen or cloned car when the records don't line up.

How We Check For Stolen Vehicles

There are no physical signs that reliably identify a stolen or VIN-cloned vehicle from the outside. The check has to be done through data.

Chapter 1

FBI NCIC records

Our theft data traces back to the FBI's National Crime Information Center, which collects vehicle theft reports from thousands of law-enforcement and criminal-justice agencies nationwide. It's the most complete national theft database and includes self-insured and uninsured vehicles that insurance records alone would miss.

Chapter 2

Insurance theft records

When a theft claim is filed with an insurer, that record enters the national insurance database independent of law enforcement. We cross-reference both sources so a theft still shows up even when only one of them has it.

Chapter 3

Title history cross-reference

VIN cloning usually leaves a trail in the title record — the same VIN registered in two states at once, or an ownership chain that doesn't add up. Tracking title across every state surfaces those inconsistencies.

Chapter 4

NMVTIS data

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System pulls from state titling agencies, junk yards, salvage yards, and insurers. A car reported stolen and later run through a salvage or junk yard leaves a record here even if police never recovered it.
