"Low miles" is easy to fake. Check a VIN for odometer rollbacks and mileage inconsistencies before you pay for miles that aren't real.

Odometer fraud isn't just a financial crime. The safety side is real too — a car with falsified mileage carries wear on components the buyer has no reason to check.
Timing belts, transmission and brake fluid, spark plugs, and dozens of other service items are replaced on mileage-based intervals. A car showing 45,000 miles that has actually covered 95,000 may be well past due on parts the buyer has no reason to suspect — and the first warning can be an outright failure.
Hidden wear & tearBrakes, tires, suspension, and clutches are all judged by the mileage on the dash. If that number is false, you're paying for remaining life that simply isn't there — and replacing it sooner than you planned.
Unexpected failuresUsed-car valuations from Kelley Blue Book, J.D. Power, and dealer pricing tools are all mileage-sensitive. A car rolled back by 50,000 miles can be priced thousands of dollars higher than it's actually worth, depending on the make and model.
You overpayRollbacks cluster on the vehicles that gain the most from looking low-mileage — luxury cars, in-demand trucks and SUVs, and cars nearing the mileage thresholds where resale value drops sharply.
High-risk vehicles targetedA rolled-back odometer only shows up when you compare the miles reported over time. We plot every reading on record so a drop — or a gap that doesn't add up — has nowhere to hide.
Odometer Reading — Sample Data
Body 4-Door SUV · 2.0L I4 · Front-wheel drive
Last reported mileage 98,042 mi in Dec 2019

9 odometer readings on file across its history.
13,310 mi (2016) → 142,490 mi (2026), rising steadily.
This timeline is consistent — no rollback detected. The same reading-by-reading check is exactly what exposes a tampered odometer.
There are no reliable physical signs of a rollback on a modern digital odometer. The check has to be done by cross-referencing the mileage reported across a vehicle's data history.
Chapter 1
Almost every time a vehicle shows up in a record — title transfers, inspections, insurance claims, auction listings, service visits — the odometer reading comes with it. We plot those readings in order and flag any point where mileage drops, or climbs implausibly little for the time that passed.
Chapter 2
Cars that pass through wholesale and salvage auctions carry condition reports that usually include an odometer reading. Those readings are independent of the title record and give a cross-reference point that's hard to fake.
Chapter 3
Federal law requires an odometer disclosure at every title transfer for vehicles under ten years old, recorded in state title records and NMVTIS. A rollback between transfers shows up as a mismatch between the earlier reading and the later disclosure.
Chapter 4
Where service history is available, the mileage logged at routine visits adds more cross-reference points. A clean run of readings followed by a sudden drop is one of the most reliable rollback signals there is.
"Checked a Mazda3 in Windsor after my cousin got stuck with a flood car last year. Mine came back clean, with the full ownership history laid out. Worth it for the peace of mind alone."
"Used this on a Honda Accord in Anchorage. The odometer chart showed steady readings across four years and the title was clean. Bought it the next morning without second thoughts."
"Checked a Toyota Hilux in Mérida for our delivery business. The report confirmed consistent mileage and no accident records. Fast, clear, and in the end a very easy decision."
"A Silverado in Birmingham looked perfect until the report showed hail damage and an insurance total loss from two states away. The seller called it a clean truck. This tool earned its fee."
"Checked a Hyundai Tucson in Kitchener before buying. Clean title, one owner, and service records all the way back to new. Quick to run and the report was easy to read on my phone."
"Checked a Volvo XC60 in Baltimore before buying from a private seller. Two owners, full dealer maintenance, and a clean title. The timeline layout made five years of history readable."
"The photos section is what sold me. I could see the exact listing pictures from when my Toyota Camry was sold in El Paso two years earlier, down to the same scratch on the bumper."
"Looked at a GMC Canyon in Lethbridge. The report showed a US import with an American accident record the Canadian listing never mentioned. Used it to negotiate two thousand off."
"Checked a Subaru Impreza in Eugene for my daughter heading to college. Clean history, consistent odometer readings, and no open recalls. Exactly the reassurance a parent wants."
"Bought a Honda HR-V in Grand Rapids. The report confirmed one owner and dealer servicing from new, and the market value section showed the asking price was fair. No haggling needed."
"I flip a couple of cars a year in Knoxville and run every VIN through this first. Last month it caught an odometer rollback of nearly 40,000 miles. That alone paid for years of reports."
"Looked at a Ford Escape in Moncton that was priced suspiciously low. The report showed a rebuilt title after a collision in another province. The seller never mentioned it. Walked away."
