The serpentine belt is the single rubber belt that drives your alternator, power steering pump, water pump and air conditioning compressor off the front of the engine. It is a wear item rather than a fault: rubber hardens and cracks with heat and age, and most manufacturers expect a replacement somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles.
