What is a Salvage Title?
A salvage title is a brand a state applies to a vehicle's title after an insurance company declares it a total loss — usually because the cost to repair it exceeds a set percentage of its value. The brand permanently marks the vehicle as having sustained major damage, whether from a collision, flood, fire, or theft recovery.
⚠️ A repaired salvage car can look flawless. The brand stays with the VIN — the cosmetic fix doesn't.
How New Mexico Issues Salvage Titles
New Mexico issues salvage titles when repair costs exceed the vehicle's value. Rebuilt vehicles must pass a state police VIN inspection.
NM Inspection Requirements
New Mexico requires emissions testing in Bernalillo County (Albuquerque).
Why it matters here
Branded cars are frequently moved across state lines and re-titled. A VIN check shows brands applied in any state — not just New Mexico.
Risks of Buying a Salvage or Rebuilt Car in New Mexico
Hidden structural damage
A salvage vehicle was totaled for a reason. Frame and unibody damage can be patched cosmetically but compromise crash safety for the life of the car.
Hard to insure & finance
Many lenders won't finance a salvage or rebuilt vehicle, and insurers often limit coverage to liability only — no comprehensive or collision.
Steep resale loss
A branded title typically cuts resale value by 20–50%. The "deal" you got often disappears the moment you try to sell.
Title washing
Some sellers move a branded car to a state with looser rules to scrub the brand off the paperwork. The damage stays; the warning label disappears.
