What a clean title does — and doesn’t — guarantee
A clean title confirms there’s no title brand on record. It does not guarantee the car has never been in an accident — minor accidents that didn’t result in a total loss often don’t trigger a brand.
That’s why a clean title and a clean history report are two different things. A vehicle can have a clean title but still show accidents, multiple owners, or service issues in its full history.
Watch out for title washing
Some sellers move a branded vehicle through a state that doesn’t carry the brand forward to obtain a “clean” title — a fraud known as title washing. The only reliable defense is checking the VIN against national databases rather than trusting the paper title alone.
