From 1 August 2025 Kosovo Customs stopped charging customs duty on goods of United States origin, provided the importer proves preferential origin. Kosovo Customs announced that from 1 August 2025 customs duty no longer applies to goods originating in the United States, subject to proof of preferential origin. A car sold in the US is not automatically of US origin: a Toyota built in Japan and titled in Ohio is Japanese-origin. A VIN beginning with 1, 4 or 5 was assembled in the United States; 2 means Canada; 3 Mexico; J Japan; K Korea; W Germany. The free VIN decoder on this site reads that character in seconds. Kosovo Customs has seized more than 2,000 foreign-plated vehicles since 2018, many from the United States and the United Kingdom, brought in by diaspora and never cleared. A car bought from a relative abroad still needs zhdoganimi, and still deserves a history check: a family car in New York is as likely to have been in a collision as any other.
