Importer une Voiture des USA en France — Coûts, Homologation and the History Check to Run First

USA to
France

French buyers face the most expensive homologation in Europe: guides quote €5,000 to €10,000 for RTI through UTAC or DREAL. A car that fails because of hidden structural damage from a US total loss costs that money twice. The American record is where the damage is documented.

At a glance

Customs duty
10% (22% for pickups classified as trucks)
VAT (TVA)
20%
Homologation
Réception à titre isolé (RTI) via DREAL/UTAC; guides quote €5,000 to €10,000 and two to four months
Ports
Le Havre, Marseille; also Antwerp and Rotterdam then road
Registration
Carte grise after homologation; some prefectures ask for a recent US history report

Copart France does not exist

Searching "Copart France" lands on Copart's Canadian French page. French buyers bid on US inventory through international accounts or brokers (auctionauto, internationalcars, motor-import and others). The lot page shows the current sale only. Earlier auction appearances have to be looked up by VIN.

Teslas and the EV question

French forums (Automobile Propre, Tesla Motors Club, Quora) discuss importing Teslas from the US at length. A large share of US Tesla exports are salvage-title cars from Copart. Flood and fire damage codes on the auction record decide whether the battery pack is a risk, and they are not visible after a cosmetic repair.

What to check before you pay

  • Title brand and state.
  • Prior auction records with photos and damage codes.
  • Odometer sequence in miles.
  • Whether the exact model exists with EU type approval, which decides whether RTI is needed.

The same check, wherever the car is going

Every guide in this hub ends the same way because every destination shares the same blind spot. France's registry, inspection and customs process each verify something real, and none of them reads the American title, the insurer's total-loss declaration or the auction record. Enter the VIN above to see which of those records exist for the car you are looking at. The preview is free; the report is $19.99, once.

Three things to check before money moves

  1. 1

    The US title brand

Clean, salvage, rebuilt, flood, junk. Issued by a US state, invisible in every European registry.

    How it is checked
  2. 2

    Prior auction records and photos

Copart and IAAI intake photos, damage codes and sale price, from every sale the car went through, not only the current lot.

    How it is checked
  3. 3

    The odometer sequence in miles

Readings at US titles, registrations and inspections in date order. A reading below an earlier one is a rollback.

Frequently asked questions

Combien coûte l'importation d'une voiture des États-Unis ?

The US price and fees, freight, 10% duty, 20% TVA on the value plus duty, homologation (RTI, quoted at €5,000 to €10,000 for a car without EU type approval), carte grise. Cars over 30 years old that qualify as collector's items enter at 0% duty and reduced VAT.

Faut-il un rapport Carfax pour la carte grise ?

Some prefectures ask for a recent US history report as proof of the vehicle's status. Any US title-history report serves; a Vektracer report includes title, accident, odometer and auction records.

Quelle est la différence entre un "salvage title" et une épave ?

A salvage title means a US insurer declared the car a total loss, at a lower damage threshold than French insurers use. The car may be repairable or may be scrap. The auction photos show which.
